Abstract

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune, demyelinating and degenerative disease of the central nervous system and it is the most common cause of neurological disability among young, active people in the world. It predominantly affects individuals in their early adult life, typically between the ages of 20 and 40, with a female predominance. The disease is socially significant, it worsens the quality of life оf the affected individuals and impacts financially their families, the so-ciety and the health care system as a whole. Multiple sclerosis is among the most studied diseases in neuroepidemiology. It is characterized by uneven worldwide distribution and although the ultimate cause of MS is unknown, a multifactorial etiology is accepted. The disease affects genetically susceptible individuals exposed to different environmental risk factors.
